This guide is written as a practical cheatsheet, not a dictionary. The goal is to help you explain why a service exists, where it fits in the Microsoft security ecosystem, and which problem it solves in a scenario question.

How To Use This Guide

SC-900 questions are usually vocabulary-and-scenario questions. You do not need to deploy an enterprise SOC from memory, but you do need to recognize the right tool from a short business problem.

Read each domain with these three questions in mind:

  1. What is the concept? Example: authentication proves who someone is.
  2. Which Microsoft service implements it? Example: Microsoft Entra ID handles cloud identity and access.
  3. What scenario points to it? Example: “Require MFA only when a user signs in from an unmanaged device” points to Conditional Access.

Domain 1.0 - Describe the Concepts of Security, Compliance, and Identity (10-15%)

This first domain is small by percentage, but it is the foundation for the rest of the exam. If you understand these ideas, the Microsoft product names become easier to remember.

1.1 Shared Responsibility Model

The shared responsibility model explains which security responsibilities belong to Microsoft and which remain with the customer.

In a traditional on-premises datacenter, the organization owns almost everything: physical security, network hardware, servers, operating systems, applications, accounts, data, backups, and compliance controls. In cloud services, Microsoft takes on more of the underlying platform responsibility, but the customer still owns important decisions around data, identities, permissions, configuration, and governance.

The exam-grade point is simple: moving to the cloud does not outsource accountability for identities and data. Even in SaaS, you still configure users, roles, permissions, labels, retention, sharing, and access policies.

1.2 Defense in Depth

Defense in depth is layered security. The idea is that no single control is perfect, so you combine multiple controls across identity, network, endpoints, applications, data, monitoring, and governance.

Defense in depth is not the same thing as Zero Trust, but they support each other. Zero Trust gives you the access philosophy; defense in depth gives you the layered implementation.

1.3 Zero Trust Model

Zero Trust is a security strategy based on three core principles:

The common mistake is thinking Zero Trust means “trust nobody.” A better explanation is: trust must be continuously earned by the request context. A user, device, application, location, and risk level all matter.

1.4 Encryption and Hashing

Encryption protects data confidentiality by converting readable data into unreadable ciphertext. It is reversible if you have the correct key.

Examples:

  • Encrypting data at rest in storage.
  • Encrypting data in transit with TLS.
  • Protecting documents with sensitivity labels and encryption.

Hashing creates a fixed-length value from input data. A good cryptographic hash is one-way: you should not be able to recover the original value from the hash.

1.5 Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC)

Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) describes how organizations make security and compliance repeatable instead of relying on heroic one-off effort.

GRC is not just paperwork. In Microsoft cloud environments, governance becomes technical: policies, labels, retention rules, role assignments, audit logs, and reports.

1.6 Identity as the Primary Security Perimeter

Traditional networks relied heavily on the corporate firewall. That model is weaker when users access SaaS apps from home networks, mobile devices, partner locations, and unmanaged browsers.

Modern security treats identity as the primary security perimeter. The identity tells the system who is requesting access, what role they have, what risk is present, and which controls should apply.

Identity becomes the control plane for:

  • Authentication.
  • Authorization.
  • MFA and passwordless sign-in.
  • Conditional Access.
  • Privileged access.
  • Audit and accountability.
  • Access reviews and lifecycle management.

1.7 Authentication and Authorization

Authentication answers: “Who are you?”

Examples:

Microsoft Entra is the identity and network access family that includes Microsoft Entra ID, identity governance, identity protection, workload identity, external identity, and related access products. For SC-900, focus on Microsoft Entra ID and the identity controls around it.

2.1 Types of Identities

Identity is not only human users. Microsoft environments include several identity types.

The exam often tests whether you understand that applications and services need identities too. Workload and managed identities reduce the need for hardcoded secrets.

2.2 Microsoft Entra ID Capabilities

Microsoft Entra ID is Microsoft’s cloud-based identity and access management service. It provides authentication, authorization, single sign-on, app registration, user and group management, device identity, sign-in logs, and access policy enforcement.

Microsoft Entra ID used to be called Azure Active Directory. You will still see “Azure AD” in older documentation, screenshots, training courses, and third-party notes. In current Microsoft branding, the name is Microsoft Entra ID.

2.3 Authentication Methods: MFA, Passwordless, and SSPR

Passwords are weak because they can be guessed, reused, phished, sprayed, leaked, and brute-forced. SC-900 expects you to recognize stronger authentication options.

SC-900 does not require deep cryptographic details of each method. It wants you to understand the security difference: MFA is stronger than password-only sign-in, and phishing-resistant/passwordless methods are stronger still.

2.4 Conditional Access

Conditional Access is Microsoft Entra’s policy engine for access decisions. It combines signals, decisions, and controls.

Conditional Access is a Zero Trust tool because it does not treat every sign-in the same. It evaluates the context.

2.5 Microsoft Entra Roles and RBAC

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) assigns permissions based on roles. Instead of granting every permission directly to every user, you assign a role that contains a defined set of allowed actions.

Be careful: Microsoft has different role scopes.

Exam cue: if the question is about managing users, groups, enterprise apps, or tenant-wide identity settings, think Microsoft Entra roles. If it is about managing Azure resources, think Azure RBAC.

2.6 Identity Protection and Governance: PIM and Access Reviews

Identity security does not end after a user signs in. Organizations must govern who has access, why they have it, and when it should be removed.

Access reviews answer a different question: “Should this person still have access?” They help remove stale access for employees who changed jobs, contractors whose projects ended, or guests who no longer need collaboration access.


Domain 3.0 - Describe the Capabilities of Microsoft Security Solutions (35-40%)

This is the largest domain. Keep the product map clear:

  • Azure security controls protect cloud infrastructure and workloads.
  • Defender for Cloud improves cloud security posture and workload protection.
  • Microsoft Sentinel is SIEM/SOAR for security operations.
  • Microsoft Defender XDR correlates threats across endpoints, email, identity, apps, and cloud apps.

The Microsoft Service Trust Portal provides access to Microsoft compliance reports, audit reports, security documentation, and trust resources. It helps customers evaluate Microsoft cloud services against regulatory and internal requirements.
